Poetry
I’m working on writing a thousand poems. I started in April 2015.
Free Poems #2 – For K.M. Pohlkamp’s Apricots and Wolfsbane
Fellow writer K.M. Pohlkamp messaged me on Twitter to request a #freepoem for her novel Apricots and Wolfsbane. This was such a fun request, because the novel is adult historical fiction about a female assassin who uses poison. That inspired me right away with this short poem:
of the same kind
a drop of poison
thief dead on the floor
saw off his finger
he keeps the ruby ring no more
There’s something about historical fiction that makes me want to rhyme! You should read an excerpt from the book to see the rich inspiration for this poem.
For the second poem, I tried to encapsulate the most unusual aspect of the protagonist which is that she is devoutly religious and reconciles this with her killings by confession. Here it is:
I enjoy
the squeak of a chair
watching their eyes realize
life was draining awaythe stillness of the body
when my poison won
taking proofthe silence when it was done
echoing in my head
until confession welcomed God’s voice back
Hope you like them! Check out K.M. Pohlkamp’s website!
Feel free to message me on Twitter @GeorgiaTell if you want a #freepoem.
Poem #405
driving by the ocean
in the dark
sea of black
never ending nothingness
Poem #404
enthusiastic cat
chases the moth
up the blinds
crash! bang!
need new blinds
Poem #403
a wine glass
full of water
and a tea bag
making sun tea
on the fire escape
in Downtown LA
Poem #402
classic look
leather gloves
smart hat
plaid skirt
classy lady
Poem #401
slept early
woke early
enjoy awakeness
enjoy sleep
Poem #400
electricity on my skin
tingling in my neck
want to close my eyes
move with tension and restraint
mind clear and lips soft
Poem #399
we set up camp in the desert
when it was already dark
we pitched our tents by flashlight
and shimmied into pajamas
as the cold desert air numbed us
I cocooned in a sleeping bag
staring up at the tent ceiling
wishing I was staring at the stars
Poem #398
walk for hours
hear a rainstorm
talk with strangers
eat with vigor
watch the people
sleep a bit
