dark purple flowers
from a pink-haired girl
it started with a paintbrush
poetry
Poem #256
the one who makes me feel real
the one who makes me feel artsy
the one who makes me feel loved
the one who makes me feel mature
the one who makes me feel safe
I love y’all!
Poem #255
blood bubbles with eagerness
smash things together until they’re new!
body shakes with energy
create a physical manifestation of the mind!
fingers bounce with nerves
now is the time for art!
Poem #254
I’m taller than a skyscraper
I’m stronger than a steamroller
I’m sturdier than a tank
but I could become addicted to feeling small
Poem #253
gentle cold-warm wind
that feels like touch
glowing dark blue sky
that looks like the ocean
crowing far away roosters
that sound like excited girls
Poem #252
blacksmith’s daughter grew
she grew big and tall
bigger and taller than everyone
her bones expanded
her skin stretched
none of the villagers want her
blacksmith says, “get smaller
blacksmith’s wife says, “stop growing”
blacksmith’s daughter cries
she yowls and tears at her skin
her flesh and bone is exposed
she removes a bit of flesh
she files down some bone
she endures the pain
the villagers smile at her
so every night she roots around under skin
pulling away pieces of herself
she throws it out
she gives it away
she fits in
blacksmith’s daughter removes herself
leaving almost empty skin
she’s gone
but now the villagers welcome her
Poem #251
sadness masked by bravado
laugh maniacally and smile
nothing can scratch that finish
Free Poems #1 – Depression
A few weeks ago, I posted on Twitter offering to write poems for people for free. Yesterday, a stranger messaged me asking me to write a poem for their friend with depression. First of all, this person is obviously such a sweetheart. Secondly, I was way too excited about this: my first #freepoem!
I’ve been sick for the last few days, but I grabbed my graph paper notebook and began writing immediately. It’s a sacred undertaking, and I take it seriously.
metamorph
insurmountable black of the darkness
he wants to not exist
always tired and perpetually missedhe cannot climb out of darkness
is there a purpose to exist?
a target he always missedwhen a caterpillar happens to exist
eats and eats, not a leaf missed
he cocoons in darknessa butterfly begins to exist
the opposite of darkness
a sight not to be misseda light exists in the darkness
Sestinas are hard. I originally tried to make “metamorph” into a sestina, but it was ultimately a slave to the form. Instead, I honored the idea of the form and made it my own.
bottle cap necklace
bottle cap rolls
from the park bench
to the store
and around the block
a child picks it up
made into a necklace
with a shiny chain
This poem was much quicker to write and conveyed the lost-and-found-and-upcycled feeling of recovering from depression. I hope you like the freeform “bottle cap necklace.”
As an endnote, feel free to message me on my contact page or on Twitter @georgiatell if you want a free poem!
Poem #250
watch a movie
lose a dog
drive across the state
come home
think about a cat
cry
Poem #249
stars like a ceiling
woohoo!
