Poem #770

when they initiated the launch sequence,
I couldn’t move
the metal scaffolding caged me
I spat out steam
when my body contained enough rage,
it rattled the cage.
I left the ground behind,
burned away all the excess fuel
and dropped the external tanks
I made it to space
much lighter than when I started
but the core of me withstood the journey

Poem #759

the little sapling has hopes
she grows and grows and grows

before she knows it,
that little sapling,
she’s holding the whole world up
the stars drape over her
a glittering big top

a company of performers underneath
dancing and flipping and belting out

before she knows it,
that company of performers,
they’ve taken down the star canvas
they’ve got another world to entertain
but she remains

a big, strong tree without stars to hold up
waiting and crying and waiting

Poem #744

giant machines walked above us
but they weren’t our lords
we controlled them with tiny devices
determined to reach the stars

we thought we were big
until they fell on us
